Best Eye Creams for Dark Circles

Under-eye darkness has several different causes and a cream can only reach some of them. Which to buy for a vascular shadow, which for pigment, and when to stop shopping.

By Stephen V.Last updated How we pick

Start with The Ordinary Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG — the pick for anyone whose under-eyes look worse in the morning and better by lunchtime. Caffeine is a vasoconstrictor, which is why a 5% serum can briefly reduce the look of puffiness and the bluish shadow that comes with it, and at this price it is the honest place to find out whether your darkness is the kind a topical can touch at all. If your circles are brown rather than blue, the retinol and niacinamide picks below are the ones aimed at pigment; if the skin under your eyes is simply dry and crepey, the ceramide cream is the cheap answer.

The uncomfortable part first, because every honest page on this topic has to say it: a review of infraorbital dark circles in the Journal of Cutaneous and Aesthetic Surgerysorts the causes by anatomic layer — the bone and ligament structure of the orbital rim, the midface soft tissue with its vasculature and fluid, and the skin itself with its pigment, thinness and visible vessels — and recommends therapy customised to whichever of those is actually responsible. Topical agents appear against the pigment and vascular contributions. Against the structural ones — a recessed orbital rim casting a shadow — the options listed are fillers, fat transfer and surgery. No cream reaches a shadow. So this roundup is organised by cause, and it tells you where to stop spending.

The picks in full

#1Best for vascular shadow and puffiness

The Ordinary Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG Eye Serum

The cult budget pick for tired, puffy eyes: a water-light serum stating 5% caffeine plus EGCG, a green-tea antioxidant. Caffeine can temporarily reduce the look of puffiness and make tired eyes look fresher — it won't erase a genetic dark circle, and the effect wears off, but at this price it's the honest place to start.

Strengths

  • States its actives plainly — 5% caffeine plus EGCG antioxidant
  • Water-light serum layers under everything without pilling
  • One of the cheapest eye products actually worth owning

Trade-offs

  • Caffeine's de-puffing effect is temporary, not a cure
  • A thin serum, not a rich cream — dry under-eyes still want a moisturizer on top
  • Does nothing for genuine, structural dark circles
Key activeCaffeine + EGCG
Stated concentration5% caffeine
FormatWater-light serum
Fragrance-freeYes
Best forAll, Puffy under-eyes

Formulation note. Water-based serum: 5% caffeine with EGCG (a green-tea antioxidant), plus glycerin and hyaluronic acid for light hydration. Caffeine is a vasoconstrictor, which is why it can briefly reduce the look of puffiness; it does not remove pigment or under-eye fat pads.

#2Best for crepey, thinning skin

RoC Retinol Correxion Under Eye Cream

The drugstore way to put retinol to work on crow's feet and fine lines. Retinol is the one eye-area active with real evidence for softening fine lines over months — RoC doesn't publish its exact strength, but the ingredient is doing the work, and it's inexpensive for a retinol eye treatment.

Strengths

  • Retinol — the eye-area active with the strongest evidence for fine lines
  • Glycerin and RoC's mineral complex to cushion the retinol
  • Cheap for a retinol eye cream

Trade-offs

  • Strength isn't published, so you can't dose it precisely
  • Retinol near the eyes can flake or sting — start twice a week
  • Uses parabens as preservatives, which some shoppers avoid

Best forFine lines, Not-too-sensitive

Formulation note. Retinol in a glycerin base with RoC's mineral complex (magnesium, zinc and copper gluconates) and panthenol. The label doesn't state a retinol percentage — usual for drugstore retinol — so the concentration reads Not published rather than a guess.

#3Best budget, for dryness

CeraVe Eye Repair Cream

A sensible, cheap eye cream with ceramides and niacinamide. It hydrates and supports the thin under-eye barrier honestly — no eye cream 'erases' dark circles, and we won't pretend this one does.

Strengths

  • Ceramides + niacinamide + hyaluronic acid
  • Fragrance-free and inexpensive
  • Marena-tip applicator for the delicate area

Trade-offs

  • No eye cream truly removes genetic dark circles — expectations matter
  • Effect on puffiness is modest
Key activeCeramides + niacinamide
Stated concentrationNot published
FormatLight cream
Fragrance-freeYes
Best forAll, Dry under-eye

Formulation note. Ceramides + niacinamide + hyaluronic acid. Real hydration for the thin eye area; dark circles are mostly genetics and structure, which no topical erases — we say so.

#4Best gentle all-rounder

Naturium Multi-Peptide Eye Cream

A well-built middle option: several peptides with squalane and hyaluronic acid in a fragrance-free cream. Peptides are a gentler, better-tolerated route than retinol, with more modest evidence behind them — a good fit if you want a smoothing, hydrating eye cream that suits sensitive skin and doesn't cost much.

Strengths

  • Four peptides with squalane and hyaluronic acid for cushiony hydration
  • Fragrance-free and gentle enough for most skin
  • Good value for a peptide-rich eye cream

Trade-offs

  • Peptide evidence is real but more modest than retinol's
  • Won't resurface skin or fade pigment the way an active treatment aims to
  • Results are gradual and subtle — maintenance, not correction
Key activePeptides + squalane
Stated concentrationNot published
FormatLight cream
Fragrance-freeYes
Best forAll, Sensitive, Dry under-eye

Formulation note. Fragrance-free cream with four peptides (acetyl hexapeptide-8 and palmitoyl tetra/tri-peptides), squalane, sodium hyaluronate, panthenol and vitamin E. Peptide levels aren't published, so the concentration reads Not published; the emollients do dependable hydrating work regardless.

Ingredients and claims read from the product listing, on August 5, 2026. “Not published” means the brand does not state that figure.

#5Best for reactive eyes

La Roche-Posay Toleriane Dermallergo Eye Cream

The pick when the skin around your eyes reacts to everything. A fragrance-free, deliberately short formula for sensitive and allergy-prone skin — niacinamide and neurosensine to soothe, shea and glycerin to comfort. It won't 'treat' lines or circles; it keeps a reactive eye area calm and hydrated, which is exactly its job.

Strengths

  • Fragrance-free, paraben-free and non-comedogenic — a low-risk formula
  • Niacinamide plus neurosensine to calm and support the barrier
  • Gentle enough around contact lenses and easily irritated eyes

Trade-offs

  • A comfort cream, not an anti-aging treatment — no retinol or exfoliant
  • The most expensive way to buy simple under-eye hydration here
  • Won't change dark circles or deeper lines
Key activeNiacinamide + neurosensine
Stated concentrationNot published
FormatSoothing cream
Fragrance-freeYes
Best forSensitive, Reactive, Allergy-prone

Formulation note. Fragrance-free, paraben-free and non-comedogenic. Niacinamide for barrier support, neurosensine (a soothing dipeptide), plus shea butter and glycerin. Built for tolerance rather than active correction — the trade-off is intentional.

First, work out which kind of dark circle you have

This takes thirty seconds in front of a mirror and it determines whether anything on this page can help you.

  • Pull the skin gently sideways. If the darkness stretches and stays, it is pigment in the skin. Pigment is the cause topicals address best.
  • Look at the color.Blue, purple or pink leans vascular — blood vessels showing through skin that is thin and semi-transparent, often with fluid. Brown or grey leans pigmentary.
  • Tilt your chin up toward a light. If the darkness disappears or moves, you are looking at a shadow cast by the contour under your eye, not a stain on it. That is the structural type, and it is the one no cream improves.
  • Check the time of day.Worse on waking and better by mid-morning means fluid is a big component — the most responsive version of all, and the cheapest to address.

Most people have a mix, which is why the review recommends customised therapy rather than a single product. It is also why a cream that transforms a colleague’s under-eyes can do nothing at all for yours.

Four of the five “not published” cells are the honest answer: outside The Ordinary, no brand here states a percentage for its retinol, peptides or niacinamide. Nobody can rank these on strength, and anyone publishing a figure for them has invented it.

How we judged these

1. Does the ingredient have a mechanism for the cause?

Caffeine constricts vessels, which is a mechanism for a vascular shadow and for fluid-driven puffiness. It is also temporary, which is why we describe it as something that changes how your under-eyes look rather than something that fixes them. Retinol thickens and remodels skin over months and has the strongest evidence of any topical for the texture side of the problem, which is relevant here because thin, transparent skin is one of the documented contributors to visible under-eye vessels. Niacinamide and peptides do real barrier and hydration work. Nothing in this category has a mechanism for a recessed orbital rim.

2. Is it tolerable on the thinnest skin on your body?

The eyelid area is where irritation shows first and worst, so a formula that would be unremarkable on a cheek can be a week of stinging here. Every pick on this page is fragrance-free. One is built entirely for tolerance — niacinamide and a soothing dipeptide, no corrective actives at all — which is a legitimate choice if your eyes react to everything, and is why it is on the list despite not targeting darkness directly.

3. Does the price match what it can actually do?

This is the category where that question matters most, because the gap between what eye creams charge and what they can deliver is the widest in skincare. Three of these five cost less than a sandwich-and-coffee lunch. The premium pick earns its price on tolerance rather than results. If a product promises to “erase” dark circles, you are being charged for a claim nobody can support — and we say the same thing in our wider eye cream roundup.

What to do about the darkness a cream cannot reach

Sleep and fluid

The fluid component is the one you can change for free. Side- and front-sleeping lets fluid pool in the lower lid; an extra pillow and a colder room do more for a morning shadow than most serums. Caffeine topically helps for an hour or two, which makes it genuinely useful before a meeting and useless as a long-term plan.

Sun protection, which is the actual pigment treatment

If your circles are brown, they are pigment, and pigment is provoked by UV exposure — including on an area most people never cover properly. Daily sunscreen right up to the lash line, or sunglasses with real coverage, is the intervention with the best evidence behind it, and it is the one step that makes any brightening ingredient worth applying at all. See best sunscreens for face and, for the pigment playbook generally, best skincare for dark spots.

Allergies and rubbing

Chronic rubbing and the congestion that comes with allergic disease are well-documented contributors to under-eye darkness, which is why the shadows deepen in pollen season for a lot of people. Treating the allergy is skincare in that case, and no cream substitutes for it.

Structure

If the darkness vanishes when you tilt your chin up, it is a shadow, and the review’s own answers for that are volume restoration and surgery. That is a conversation with a clinician, not a purchase. We would rather tell you that than sell you a fourth cream. Our guide to getting rid of dark circles goes further into the non-product side.

What we left out, and why

Anything claiming to erase or eliminate dark circles. No topical does, the published review does not say one does, and a claim that large is a reliable signal that the rest of the page is not careful either.

Vitamin K and “bruise-fading” eye creams. The marketing leans on an analogy with bruising; the published evidence for topical vitamin K on infraorbital darkness is not strong enough for us to rank a product on it.

Hydroquinone products.Prescription-strength skin lightening around the eye is a clinician’s decision, not a shelf purchase, and it is explicitly off the table in pregnancy — see pregnancy-safe skincare.

Eye masks, rollers and chilled metal wands. Cold does reduce the look of puffiness, briefly, and a cold spoon does it for free. We are not going to recommend a device for an effect a refrigerator produces.

How to use an eye product without making things worse

Use a small amount — a grain of rice per eye — and apply it on the orbital bone rather than the lid itself; anything you place close to the lash line migrates into the eye as the day goes on. Pat it in with a ring finger instead of dragging. Introduce one product at a time and give it three to four weeks, because the only ingredients here with a real time-course are the slow ones. If you are adding a retinol product, start twice a week and build; the eye area is where retinol irritation shows up first, and the method is the same one in can you use retinol around your eyes.

And set the expectation honestly before you buy anything: the realistic outcome of a good eye cream is skin that looks better hydrated, slightly smoother and less crepey, with a shadow that reads a shade lighter because the surface is reflecting light better. That is worth having at these prices. It is not the same as the circles being gone, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling rather than explaining.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best eye cream for dark circles?

It depends on the cause, which is why there is no single answer. For a bluish shadow that is worse in the morning, The Ordinary Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG is the cheapest honest starting point — caffeine is a vasoconstrictor, so it can briefly reduce the look of puffiness and the shadow that goes with it. For brown pigment and crepey texture, a retinol eye cream such as RoC's is the one with real evidence behind the ingredient, over months rather than days. If the darkness disappears when you tilt your chin toward a light, it is a structural shadow and no cream will reach it.

Can eye cream actually get rid of dark circles?

Not completely, and not at all for some causes. A published review of infraorbital dark circles sorts the contributors into the bone and ligament structure, the midface soft tissue and vasculature, and the skin's own pigment and thinness — and recommends treatment matched to the cause. Topicals appear against the pigment and vascular contributions; against structural shadowing the listed options are fillers, fat transfer and surgery. A good eye cream realistically makes the area better hydrated, smoother and a shade lighter in appearance.

How do I know if my dark circles are pigment or shadow?

Two quick tests. Stretch the skin gently sideways: if the darkness stays, it is pigment in the skin. Then tilt your chin up toward a light: if the darkness lightens or shifts position, you are seeing a shadow cast by the contour, not a stain. Color is a clue too — brown and grey lean pigmentary, blue and purple lean vascular. Most people have a combination.

Does caffeine eye serum work?

For the look of puffiness and the bluish shadow that comes with fluid, yes, temporarily — caffeine is a vasoconstrictor and that is a real mechanism. It does not remove pigment and it does not change the fat pads or bone structure under your eye, and the effect wears off, so treat it as something you apply before you want to look rested rather than a cure. At its price, it is also the cheapest way to find out whether your darkness is the responsive kind.

Is retinol safe to use under the eyes?

Generally yes, with care — the eyelid is the thinnest skin on the body, which is the reason to go slowly rather than a reason to avoid it. Start twice a week, use a grain-of-rice amount on the orbital bone rather than on the lid, and expect to need a buffering moisturizer at first. Stop if you get persistent redness or flaking rather than pushing through it. Retinoids are off the table in pregnancy.

Do I need a dedicated eye cream at all?

Not necessarily. Most eye creams are moisturizers in small, expensive tubes, and your regular fragrance-free moisturizer is usually fine around the eyes. A dedicated product earns its place when it contains something your face cream does not — caffeine for fluid, a retinol you want at a gentler dose, or a deliberately short formula for a reactive eye area. Buying one out of habit is how this category stays profitable.

Why are my dark circles worse in the morning?

Fluid. Lying flat lets fluid pool in the lower lid, and the thin skin there makes it visible as puffiness and a bluish shadow that drains over the first hour or two of being upright. That version is the most responsive of all: an extra pillow, a cooler room, less salt the night before and a cold compress do more for it than most products. A caffeine serum helps for an hour or two on top of that.
