Salicylic Acid: What It Does and How to Use It

What salicylic acid is
Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA). The reason it behaves so differently from AHAs like glycolic or lactic acid comes down to chemistry: salicylic acid is oil-soluble. AHAs are water-soluble and work on the skin’s surface, but salicylic acid can mix with the sebum in a pore and get down into it. Once there, it loosens the plug of dead cells and oil that would otherwise harden into a blackhead or turn into a breakout.
What it actually helps with
Salicylic acid does a few related things well:
- Clears and prevents clogs. By exfoliating inside the pore, it dissolves the blackhead-and-whitehead congestion that oily skin is prone to, and keeps new clogs from forming.
- Calms breakouts.It’s mildly anti-inflammatory, so it softens the redness and swelling of active blemishes as well as preventing new ones. The American Academy of Dermatology lists it among the core over-the-counter acne ingredients.
- Smooths oily-skin texture. Regular use refines the rough, bumpy feel that comes with congestion, and can soften the look of enlarged pores.
- Works on the body too. It shows up in washes for chest and back breakouts and in treatments for the rough bumps of keratosis pilaris.

The strength that matters
For leave-on facial products, the useful range is 0.5% to 2%, and 2%is the standard ceiling in over-the-counter acne products. You don’t need to chase a higher number — above the everyday range, all you reliably add is irritation. Format matters as much as percentage: a leave-on toner or serum stays on the skin and keeps working, while a cleanserrinses off within a minute, so a 2% wash is much gentler than a 2% leave-on. How to use it
Introduce salicylic acid the way you would any active: slowly.
