What hyaluronic acid is

Despite the name, hyaluronic acid isn’t an exfoliating acid like glycolic or salicylic — it doesn’t resurface or irritate. It’s a humectant, a type of ingredient that attracts and holds water. Your skin already makes it; it’s part of what keeps young skin looking plump. In a serum, it sits in the upper layers of skin and binds water there, which is what creates that immediate hydrated, slightly plumped look. The “acid” in the name is chemistry, not a caution.

What it actually does

  • Hydrates the surface. It holds water in the outer skin, relieving the tight, dehydrated feeling and giving skin a smoother, more supple surface.
