Glycolic and salicylic acid are the two exfoliating acids you’ll see everywhere, and they’re easy to mix up — but they do almost opposite jobs. Glycolic works on the surface; salicylic works inside the pore. That single difference in chemistry decides which one your skin actually needs.
Glycolic acid: surface tone and glow
Glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), and it’s water-soluble, so it works at the skin’s surface, loosening dull, dead cells so they shed evenly. The payoff is smoother texture, a brighter, more even tone, and that fresh “glow.” It’s the pick for dullness, rough texture, uneven tone and sun damage, and it suits normal, dry and sun-damaged skin especially well. Salicylic acid: pores and breakouts
Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA), and it’s oil-soluble— the key difference. Which should you use?
Start from your concern. Dullness, rough texture or uneven tone → glycolic. Oily skin, blackheads or breakouts → salicylic.
